Message From The Chair

Welcome to Eugenio María de Hostos Community College!

I am the chair of the Department of Language and Cognition, and I am very happy to say “Hi!” and wish you well.  I welcome you not only to Hostos but also to my department’s Web site.  This handbook explains the many opportunities that the department has to offer and should be the first step you take as you visit the web site.

Because you are an ESL student, you will be taking the ESL courses of the Department of Language and Cognition.  It is my hope that you will feel like a member of the “L & C family.”  My colleagues and I believe in you.  We will do our best to respond to your needs.  We will help you to learn English.  We will also advise you on the selection of courses you will have to take to prepare for your career.

You are now embarking upon a wonderful journey, a journey that will influence the rest of your life.  I have the greatest respect for you as you take this important step to pursue your dream.  Getting your diploma will not be easy.  You will have many challenges along the way.  Nevertheless, as you face each challenge, you must say to yourself, “This is hard, but it is worth it.”  I know this is true because YOU are “worth it!”

If there is any way that I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to come to see me.  My office is in B-529, and my door is always open to you.

All my best wishes to you!

Robert F. Cohen, Ph.D.
