Chief Information Officer and Assistant Vice President of IT

Varun Sehgal serves as the Chief Information Officer and Assistant Vice President of IT for the college, a role he has held since 2006. In this role, AVP Sehgal is responsible for the college’s overall technology strategy and operations including Infrastructure, Desktop Support, Systems Administration, IT Service, the Student Computing Center/Open Lab, Business Continuity, Information Security, Classroom Technology Support, Collaboration & Training, Enterprise Applications, IT Strategic Initiatives and Project Management. During his tenure, he has driven the modernization of Hostos’ technology/classroom environment as well as having led numerous strategic and operational initiatives to advance the college’s collective goals around student success and operational efficiencies. Additionally, the college now has a more collaborative and comprehensive approach to assessing and delivering technology solutions based on our constituents needs, while ensuring standardization where possible for cost and support management.

Under his leadership, Hostos has become a role model across CUNY and the nation for the effective and efficient use of technology as reflected by numerous CUNY IT, CUNY Productivity and the national Digital Community Colleges Survey awards where the college has continuously placed in the top 5, including first place in 2016.

By focusing on creating a diverse, customer-focused team of professionals, AVP Sehgal has established a culture of collective purpose with a focus on the mission of helping our students succeed. He is a chair, co-chair or member of numerous campus and CUNY-wide committees helping set the strategic direction for the college and University.

Prior to Hostos, AVP Sehgal worked at global multi-billion dollar companies including Simpson, Thacher & Bartlett, as well as Cap Gemini Ernst & Young (CGEY) where he oversaw international technology operations leading to improved operational outcomes, reduced costs and overall improved technology service levels. AVP Sehgal was instrumental in facilitating the return-to-operations for numerous Fortune 100 companies after 9/11 while at CGEY.

AVP Sehgal holds a dual-MBA in Operations Management and Computer Information Systems from Baruch College, a B.Sc. in Computer Science from the NYU Poly School of Engineering, a Certificate in Financial Management from Cornell University, and has completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management. Additionally, AVP Sehgal holds numerous industry certifications from Microsoft, IBM, ITIL & Cisco.
