WEEK 15

We are nearing the end of the spring 2021 semester! We want to wish you well on your final exams and share some end of the semester clues.  
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Important Dates! – Check out the Hostos Academic Calendar for information on important upcoming dates. For example, the last day to withdraw from a Spring 2021 course and the last day to complete any Incomplete (INC) courses from Fall 2020 or Winter 2021 is Monday May 17. And don’t forget, finals run from May 18 through May 25.    
  • ESL Summer Bridge – Enhance your language skills during the summer by participating in one of our ESL workshops. Students who are interested in enhancing their reading, writing, and speaking skills can register here
  • Math Summer Workshops – Register for one of the math workshops available for to students who need to develop their math skills. Registration is taking place now. Click here to register
  • End the semester on a high note – Watch this short message about getting support from HALC, the Counseling Center, the Library, the Writing Center and ARC. 
  • Celebrate Our Grads – Don’t forget to watch our 37th Honors Convocation on May 25 at 6 p.m. and 51st Commencement Ceremony on May 28 at 2 p.m. on Hostos' YouTube Channel

WEEK 14

The semester is winding down and you’re starting to prepare for finals. We want to let you know about some available virtual and on-campus resources to enhance your student success! 
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues:

  • Virtual Student Center – Still have Hostos related questions? Check out Caiman Direct, our new virtual student center. Students can get live support Mondays and Thursdays, as well as additional information on Financial Aid, Registrar, Health Services, etc. Just click here to get started.  
  • Hostos Library Study Hall – Available May 10 through May 20, from 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Closed Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Register through the LibCal system here. Use your Hostos username and password to register for a 1-hour, 45-minute time slot. 
  • Open Computer Lab in C-595 – Available May 10 to May 26, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Students will be able to reserve an in person 30-minute time slot. This is done using Succeed @ Hostos, just login with your Hostos e-mail and password, scroll to where it says “Student Computer Center (SCC) Staff” then click “Schedule” to book a timeslot.

Welcome to Week 13! The Caiman Clues Team would like to update you on some exciting scholarships and new virtual resources for students. Take a look below! Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Student Evaluations Are Open! Your experience as a student is valuable and we want to hear from you. Please tell us about your experiences in the classroom by submitting an online student evaluation of your professors
  • Are you graduating and ready to transfer? If so, check the Career Ladders Scholarship at the CUNY School of Professional Studies (SPS)! Students may be awarded up to $1,000 towards first semester tuition to close any financial gap for students who wish to enroll in one of the following programs at SPS: B.S. in Nursing, B.S. in Health Information Management, B.S. in Health Services Administration, and Online Certificate in Medical Coding. Click here for more information. This is an opportunity you do not want to pass up! 
  • The Hostos Engineering Academic Talent (HEAT) scholarship is available for Hostos students perusing a degree in any engineering A.S. major. Awardees receive roughly $2,000 per semester or $4,000 per academic year. Review the guidelines and eligibility requirements, then feel free to apply

WEEK 12

It is starting to feel like spring in New York City! As the weather keeps warming up and the semester draws to a close, it means one of two things for Hostos students: graduation or registration. Below is some important information for spring and summer graduates, as well as a link to get connected with advisors for continuing Hostos students. 
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Earth Week is here! – To join any of the events that are taking place, please take a look at our virtual brochure. Also check out the Blessing Mother Earth event with the Elders of Indigenous Communities from around the world (RSVP here), and participate in the Science Art Contest by voting for your favorite pictures here
  • Summer 2021 Graduates – For those students who are taking classes to complete their degree this summer, please complete the Summer 2021 (September) graduation application, which can be accessed using these steps. Should you encounter an issue applying for graduation, please contact GRADUATIONAUDIT@hostos.cuny.edu. If you are a student who is taking 4 credits or less this summer to finish their degree program, you can participate in the Spring 2021 Commencement Ceremony.
  • Spring 2021 Graduates – Students all student eligible for Spring 2021 graduation can have their photo added to the virtual commencement ceremony. To do so, please e-mail commencementRSVP@hostos.cuny.edu with your name, EMPL ID number, photo, major, and degree designation (A.A., A.S., or A.A.S.). Keep in mind that the deadline to do is Monday, April 26, 2021. 
  • Continuing Students – For those of you not graduating in Spring 2021 or Summer 2021, please make sure that you are getting advisement for the upcoming semester(s) and start planning your own graduation path with an Advisor or Student Success Coach. This can be done my scheduling an appointment using Succeed @ Hostos. If you still cannot find your Advisor or Student Success Coach, please reach out the Caiman Clues Team with your full name, EMPL ID number, and we send you their contact information.

  • Graduation Information – All are welcome to join the Hostos Community College 2021 digital commencement ceremony on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 2 p.m. on Hostos’ YouTube. Graduation candidates are encouraged to email one photo, one quote, Empl ID, and degree/major to commencementRSVP@hostos.cuny.edu for inclusion in the digital ceremony by April 26, 2021. We invite Hostos faculty and students to help nominate the Spring 2021 commencement speaker by completing the “Speaker Nomination Form” using your Hostos user ID and password to submit your nominee for consideration.

WEEK 10

Welcome back from spring break! We hope you were able to relax and are ready to get back to classes! With just a few weeks until the end of the spring semester, it is time to start thinking about the upcoming summer session and fall semester. 
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Let’s Get Registered – Registration for Summer and Fall 2021 is open! Don’t delay, get advised and register today! You can make an appointment with your Advisor or Student Success Coach using Succeed @ Hostos.
  • Connect with Financial Aid or Bursars – If you have questions about your financial aid or your bill, then it is important to reach out. Here are links to the contact information and hours of operation for Financial Aid and the Bursars Office. Keep in mind a Bursars hold on CUNYfirst will block you from registering. 
  • STEM Waivers For Summer 2021 – Certain STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) classes will be offered at a reduced cost this summer through a waiver program. Again, please keep in mind you must meet all waiver requirements to qualify otherwise you will be responsible for the full amount of tuition and fees. Speak with your Student Success Coach or Advisor for more details. 
    To be eligible for a STEM waiver, it must be your first time enrolled in the course, the course must be required for your degree program, and you must be matriculated; no non-degree or e-Permit students, you must be a NYC resident, and you must be enrolled into a waiver-eligible section.

WEEK 9

Welcome to Week 9! Spring has sprung and everyone knows that means the end of the semester will be here soon. Springtime also means spring break, so take that time to give yourself a break or catch up on missing assignments. With the end of the semester just a few short weeks away, make sure you meet with your advisor or student success coach for Summer/Fall course advisement, or if you are graduating this semester make sure you apply for graduation!  
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Spring Break – Please be advised that starting Saturday March 27 through Sunday April 4 the college will be on spring recess. Classes will not be taking place during this time, but administrative offices will be open. Check out other important dates by clicking the Spring 2021 Academic Calendar
  • Register for Classes – Class registration for Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 opens on April 5. Make sure you schedule an appointment with your advisor or success coach to discuss course advisement. Use the Succeed @ Hostos website to schedule an appointment. Your Succeed @ Hostos username and password are the same as your Hostos Webmail. If you have problems logging in contact the IT Service Desk at (718) 518 6646. If IT does not answer when you call, leave a message with your name, EMPL ID number, phone number, and the reason you are contacting them. Classes fill up quickly so don’t delay! 
  • Graduation Information – If you are graduating this semester there are a few things you need to know. First. the make sure to apply for graduation by April 5, which you can do here. Also, you can order you cap and gown by May 1 using this link. All are welcome to join the Hostos Community College 2021 digital commencement ceremony on Friday, May 28, 2021. at 2 p.m. on Hostos’ YouTube. Welcome to Week 8! Congratulations, we’re halfway into the semester! The Caiman Clues team wants to help you keep up the momentum and support you through to the end of the semester. Below, we have some virtual supports to facilitate your continued success. Keep up the great work!

  • Virtual Campus Events – Attend virtual campus events coming up! On March 17 at 3:30 p.m., check out “Preparing for the Real World” on Zoom! Stay in the know about more upcoming events here
  • Keep up the momentum – We are at that halfway point in the semester, and we want you to keep up the momentum! Make sure you’re checking in with your professors about your courses and utilizing campus resources to keep your grade strong. Professors have their contact information and office hours listed on their syllabi. If you need support in a course, we are offering virtual tutoring sessions here
  • Check in – Make sure to schedule your next appointment to check in with your Success Coach or advisor. Summer and fall enrollment will open soon, and you’ll want to confirm your advisement and courses for next semester! You can log in to your Succeed@Hostos account to schedule your next appointment. 
  • Are you experiencing financial hardships? Hostos One Stop student support services may be able to help.

Welcome to Week 7! As we move through the semester the Caiman Clues team wants to make sure you stay up to date on the College’s virtual support services. Also, as the seasons being to change, it is time to start thinking about graduation.   • Virtual Library – Librarians and tech tutors are available LIVE online and ready to help you. Check out the Library’s online chat schedule here. If it's after hours, send an email to reflibrarian@hostos.cuny.edu
  • Join (EdTech) Workshops – The Office of Educational Technology (EdTech) is pleased to present a series of workshops online, with a strong focus on taking full advantage of technology tools and strategies to improve in every area of teaching and learning. 
  • Digital Spring 2021 Commencement – Hostos Community College’s Spring 2021Commencement Ceremony will be streamed live on Friday, May 28, 2021 at 2 p.m. to honor its graduating class. Due to the social and physical distancing guidelines throughout the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the College will honor graduates digitally. Read more here about the Chancellor’s decision. Moreover, Hostos faculty, staff and students are invited to nominate the commencement speaker via the “Speaker Nomination Form.”

WEEK 6

Welcome to Week 6 of the semester! We want share some the financial support options that are available to you! 
         
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Scholarship Opportunities – Review our scholarship opportunities here and see if you qualify for one or more! For questions and assistance in the application process, contact the Hostos Scholarship Office at mlibfeld@hostos.cuny.edu or at 718-518-4166. 
  • Apply for Financial Aid – The FAFSA and TAP applications for the 2021–2022 academic year are available online. If you need help completing the FAFSA, click here, and for TAP, you can schedule a phone call. Keep in mind, the 2021-2022 applications determine your financial aid eligibility for Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and Spring 2022. 
  • Meet Hostos Counselors! – Interested in learning more about the Hostos Counseling Center and meeting their team? Now you can check out this short video to get more information. 
  • Struggling with Classes – If you feel like you're falling behind, make sure you reach out to your professors and arrange a time to speak with them. Every professor has their e-mail address posted on their course syllabus. Don’t give up and don’t be afraid to reach out for help. You can also make an appointment with you Coach/Advisor for help, too. Log in to Succeed @ Hostos to make an appointment; your login credentials are the same as your Hostos webmail.

  • Hostos Majors Fair – On Wednesday, March 3, the College will be hosting a Majors Fair from 12 – 3 p.m. and from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. This collaborative event will allow you to get more information on your degree program and connect with professors, advisors, and career services. WEEK 4

We’re heading into Week 4. Hopefully you’re settling into your virtual classes nicely and connecting with your professors. We want to remind you of some online events and other virtual support systems so that you can stay on track this semester, as well as stay connected to the Hostos campus. 
                          
Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Virtual Events – Check out the virtual programs being offered in celebration of Black History Month. Review the events calendar here: https://hostos.cuny.edu/Home-Page-Content/Events 
  • Save the Date!The Hostos Majors Fair will be held on March 3, 2021. The fair will provide students with a basic introduction to the majors at Hostos. Students will have the opportunity to speak with faculty members and academic advisors to learn more about academic and career options. This fair is a great opportunity for students to explore their interests, ask questions, and connect with the campus community to successfully navigate their majors and make informed career choices. 
  • Need Support Outside of Class? – If you are feeling stressed or anxious, we are here to help. As a student you qualify for free and confidential counseling. The college is now offering a 24/7 crisis texting hotline for students. A trained professional can be reached by texting the word “CUNY” to 741741. Additionally, the staff at our One Stop Resource Center conduct free benefits screenings for Medicaid, food vouchers, housing, and public assistance. 
  • Need to attend a technology training, but the given schedule does not work? – The EdTech team has created self-paced trainings for Microsoft Office, Blackboard, ePortfolios, and more. Log in to Blackboard, and look for the training banners by going to the Hostos Resources tab and enroll in this self-paced course.

WEEK 3

Welcome to Week 3! By this time, you should have been able to find your virtual classrooms and start to get acclimated to online learning. Transitioning to online learning can be difficult, so the Caiman Clues team wants to support you in that area. Additionally, we want to support students outside of the classroom during these unprecedented times.    

Here are the Caiman Clues: 

  • Virtual Orientation – Learn about the College’s various student resources and services, such as tutoring, advisement, how to use CUNYfirst, and Blackboard using Hostos’ virtual orientation guide
  • Need Support with your assignments? – All students are eligible for free tutoring through the Hostos Academic Learning Center (HALC) in a wide range of subjects. The Writing Center is also providing support for writing. 
  • Get Your Books – Many classes at Hostos require certain textbooks which you buy online at the official Hostos Bookstore. If you log in with your CUNYfirst credentials, your books will pop up automatically.

WEEK 2

Welcome to the start of the spring semester! We hope you enjoyed your break. To help you get ready for the semester, this week’s Clues include important information about how to familiarize yourself with the different learning technologies that are part of your courses at Hostos.
                         
Here are the Caiman Clues:

  •  Need a Laptop or Wi-Fi Hotspot? – If you need access to laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot, we have loaner devices available. Please fill out the technology request questionnaire, here. If you need extra assistance completing the form, reach out to your Student Success Coach or Advisor.
  • Online Student Workshops – Check out tech readiness online workshops offered by Education Technology here. Sign up in advance and add a workshop to your schedule today!
  • Verify Mode of Instruction – Hostos has two modes of online learning: synchronous and asynchronous. For synchronous classes, you will be responsible for logging into a live class session on specific days of the week at specific times. If you see classes listed as “Online” without specific dates and times, your class is asynchronous. This means your class does not meet at a set time and work is done on your own time, so long as you adhere to the class deadlines outlined in the syllabus. Check CUNYfirst for details, and always consult with your instructor when in doubt.

WEEK 1

Welcome back! Classes Begin Friday, So Check Your Schedule., Are You Ready?

Caiman Clues wants to wish a warm welcome to our new and continuing Hostos students. The first day of the semester is Friday January 29 and we want you to start the semester on the right foot!
                         
Here are the Caiman Clues:
  •  Verify You Schedule – Be sure to verify your schedule on your CUNY First Student Center. Classes listed as “online-synchronous” have specific dates and times at which you need to log in. Conversely, classes listed as “online-asynchronous” do not have specific dates and times. In either case, please make sure you check out each class on Blackboard for more information and read your syllabus.
  • Semester Checklist – Check out this student checklist so you can begin your semester successfully. Find links to request a loaner laptop, complete the “Are You ready?” virtual class and so much more.
  • Still Need Help? – Reach out to your Advisor ASAP Advisor, Student Success Coach, or College Discovery Advisor by e-mail at ASAP@hostos.cuny.eduSSCU@hostos.cuny.edu, or Collegediscovery@hostos.cuny.edu, depending on your advisement area.

Hope you had a restful break. We are so excited to welcome you to a new semester at Hostos Community College. Every week, the College will send out Caiman Clues — important tips and deadline reminders about everything from financial aid to advisement.   • Check Out Your Virtual Classroom – Your professors will use Blackboard to post important information, like your syllabus, and host virtual class sessions. Use your CUNYfirst credentials to log in. To access your Blackboard click here. 
  • Get the Dates – The Spring Semester starts on January 29. Make sure to stay up-to-date using the semester's Academic Calendar.  Note important deadlines and days the college is closed. For example, on February 12 and 15 the college is closed.
  • Stay Connected – The main way the College will contact you is via your Hostos Webmail. You can look up your account here.
