COVID-19: Protecting Our Community on Campus

Updated January 2023

Keeping each other safe, together

We must continue to follow basic precautions to reduce the risks of COVID-19 for everyone. The College also has some specific details to be aware of on our Know Before You Go page.

Effective March 7, 2022, wearing a mask while on the Hostos campus is no longer required; however, anyone is welcome to continue wearing a mask if they choose to do so. Individuals who are not vaccinated or have a medical or religious exemption are still encouraged to wear a mask on campus. Masks are available and can be requested from Public Safety at the front desk of each Hostos building.

For Students and Faculty:

  • If you have not already done so, you must upload proof of vaccination to CUNYfirst before the start of the Spring 2023 term if you’re:
    • Taking a class on campus (in-person or hybrid) or doing in-person clinicals or fieldwork.
    • Coming on campus to use services or resources (like the Library, Open Computer Lab, or Financial Aid), with limited exceptions.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to get a booster when they become eligible for one. Those 18 and older are eligible for a booster shot at 5 months after the completion of two dose regimen of Pfizer, 5 months after the completion of two dose regimen of Moderna or 2 months after the Johnson and Johnson (J&J) shot.

  • All full- and part-time faculty and non-teaching instructional staff are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 (two dose Pfizer or Moderna regimen, or 1 dose J&J) and their proof of vaccination uploaded in to CUNYfirst by May 27, 2022 unless a religious or medical exemption has been approved.

Because students and faculty are expected to be vaccinated (except for those granted medical or religious exemptions), physical distancing will not be a required safety measure for classroom and educational settings. People who are not fully vaccinated should continue to practice physical distancing.

What we're doing on campus

Our strategies to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in campus buildings fall into several categories:

The College has been working to ensure our campus environment is safe for everyone who’s here. Everything we’ve done, and will do, meets or exceeds CDC recommendations for preventing the spread of COVID-19.

You can check our website and CUNY’s Coronavirus Updates for changes throughout the reopening process.

The Campus COVID-19 Plan and CUNY Guidance

Hostos Community College’s Campus COVID-19 Plan was most recently updated in January 2023. It can be found on our website in two formats:

The reopening plan was developed and has been revised in accordance with the CUNY Guidelines for Safe Campus Reopening. Our plan and CUNY’s guidelines are both informed by NYSDOH and CDC rules and recommendations.
